Dr. Halfdanarson is a Professor of Oncology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science and a consultant in Medical Oncology at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Halfdanarson earned his medical degree from the University of Iceland and completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Iowa followed a fellowship in Hematology and Medical Oncology at Mayo Clinic, Minnesota. Dr. Halfdanarson was on faculty as a medical oncologist and neuroendocrine specialist at the University of Iowa after completing his fellowship in 2007 until he transferred to the Mayo Clinic in Arizona where he was for three years. He has been on faculty at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota since 2015.
Dr. Halfdanarson is the Chair of the GI Tumor Group within Medical Oncology at Mayo Clinic, the Co-Chair of the Colorectal Cancer Tumor Board and the Assistant Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Director.
Dr. Halfdanarson specializes in GI oncology with a focus on neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) and also staffs the Unknown Primary Clinic at Mayo. Dr. Halfdanarson is a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines panel for NETs, the co-chair of the Guidelines and Publications Committee and on the Board of Directors of the North American Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (NANETS).
