Microgrids have moved ‘center-stage’ as optimal solutions for power resiliency and sustainability. Private homes, agricultural complexes, academic campuses, health care centers, military bases, and even corporate grounds are increasingly deploying microgrid options to secure continuous, clean, high quality electricity.
But many, if not most, of these systems are not yielding their full potential and value. As a result, they are still considered a luxury for those who have critical needs and where cost is not a barrier. So, what is the missing piece to usher them into the mainstream of powering all types of facilities with lower total cost of ownership and the greatest penetration of renewables and other ‘clean’ energy sources?

The EMerge Alliance, a non-profit NGO, and its commercial, academic and government members have been leading the way in bringing about a transformative Grid-of-Grids architecture for the collection, storage, distribution and utilization of electricity comprised of real-time, multi-tiered, networked nanogrids, microgrids and other distributed energy resources (DERs) using holonic distributed intelligent controls and common bus coupling.
