Electrical Design Considerations for 800 Vac Solar PV Projects

Today’s large-scale PV system architecture involves smaller DC collection systems and expanded AC systems. This architecture has substantively changed with the innovation of 800 Vac string inverters. System voltages and available fault currents have been pushed beyond commonly available UL Listed equipment ratings, which until recently were maxed at 600 Vac. Now, 800 Vac combiner equipment solutions are available with testing to UL891, interruption ratings up to 65kA, and third-party certification. This session will explore AC collection system configurations enabling design flexibility to employ larger power transformers, which reduces the AC collection system infrastructure, driving down the installed cost and increasing reliability. Attendees will learn design standards for those who develop, design, specify, purchase, construct and operate PV systems. The session will look at electrical system single-line diagrams of 800 Vac combiners from various solar projects to show optimal UL891 switchboard and transformer combinations.
