Standardizing MicroGrid Communications and Certification
On Demand
Sponsored By:
Objective: The talk is aimed at informing the audience about the need for MicroGrid communications standards and a project with UL to develop such a standard to facilitate testing and certification of a "standard" MicroGrid.
Methods: This would be a presentation in a Technical Symposium session and lay out the challenges/considerations in developing the standard. There is an urgent need to standardize and certify MicroGrids so that approval and installation can be expedited and the costs and time to do so significantly reduced. This is a challenging task because or the current lack of agreement on what a microgrid is, what the elements are and what would be tested and certified. The authors are part of an effort by UL Standards to develop such a standard, UL 3001, for this purpose. And the paper would provide an update of progress in the development of the standard. Considerations to be discussed include: - MicroGrid Performance Criteria - MicroGrid Requirements - Scope of Communications in a Standard - External Communications - Internal Communications - Testing and Certification
Results: the talk would provide an update on the progress in developing such a standard. By SPI 2020 there should be significant progress to report.
Conclusion: this talk would discuss a critical topic in the scaling of affordable MicroGrids that employ renewable energy resources.
