Abstract:

Session/Poster Description: Clinicians are well versed in understanding and embracing a continuum of care model. As this model becomes more complex, through abstinence-based treatment, medication-assisted treatment, or a combination of both, clinicians are met with resistance. From prevention, intervention, treatment, and post treatment, recovery support services play a critical role in the well-being of individuals moving through the continuum of care. According to a recent study in the Community Mental Health Journal, “Oxford House Residents’ Attitudes Toward Medication Assisted Treatment Use in Fellow Residents”, “Negative attitudes regarding MAT were observed among residents who were not receiving MAT…and clinicians should be mindful that residents living in abstinence-based recovery homes may not be receptive to persons receiving MATs…” (Majer et al., 2018).

During this session, we will explore negative attitudes associated with MAT and abstinence-based recovery, how those negative attitudes can be a barrier within the continuum of care model, and what clinicians can do support individuals who choose abstinence-based treatment, medication-assisted treatment, or a combination of both to enhance positive outcomes for individuals being served.
