Designing compliance monitoring and reporting practices across fifty compliance indicators in collaboration with various stakeholders is an increasingly challenging endeavor. As the education compliance landscape becomes ever more rigorous, so does the increased administrative burden to monitor compliance at all levels. The Office of Compliance Services for the NYC Department of Education (DOE) is using Power BI Premium to deploy a wide range of interactive dashboards to schools and central administrators at all levels. In September 2019, the DOE went live with its new compliance measurement platform which leverages Power BI as its core. In this session we will discuss some of the successes and challenges we have faced during the last two years from inception to deployment and cover the following topics: • Strategies on deploying Power BI apps to over 2,000 users within the DOE across a wide-range of use-cases (i.e., Principals, Superintendents, Field and School Staff, and Central Program Office etc.). o From managing workspaces to leveraging cross-report drill-through features. • Methods on how best to use row-level security functionality to comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA law). • Leveraging usage metric reports to design professional development strategies. o Gaining insight into how people use data during key periods during the school year. • Best practices on assigning Power BI Free licenses at an enterprise level via Outlook (for Premium Workspaces). • Using Power BI to improve educational data-literacy across all stakeholders. • Establishing data governance structures where there are none! Who do you turn to? In this session, we will also showcase our Compliance Measurement Platform and share some success stories on how analytics are changing the way the DOE serves students and families. • Interactive analytic dashboards that help stakeholders mitigate compliance risk in near real-time. • Successful strategies on how to scale adoption to “laymen†users. • Using Power BI to better support Students in Temporary Housing: When data makes a real impact. A lot has happened since the last time we presented at the 2019 Washington DC Power BI World tour! We look forward to engaging the community of practice and sharing our journey in designing next-generation tools for consuming big data in education.
