Dr. Hanzel serves as Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Director of the Structural Heart Disease programs at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and its subspecialty board of Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology. Dr. Hanzel is associate professor at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.
A graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., Dr. Hanzel completed his internship at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, his residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and then his cardiology fellowship back at the National Naval Medical Center. Dr. Hanzel then served in the United States Navy, Lieutenant Commander, as a staff cardiologist at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital from 1999 to 2002. He completed an interventional cardiology fellowship in June 2004 at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan where he served as chief interventional cardiology fellow in his last year.
Dr. Hanzel has written and co-authored numerous abstracts, manuscripts and book chapters, and has a strong research interest in transcatheter aortic valve replacement, transcatheter mitral valve repair, left atrial appendage occlusion, and PFO closure.
Dr. Hanzel is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a Fellow of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions Structural Heart Disease Council. He is a member of the national STS/ACC Transcatheter Valve Therapy Registry Steering Committee and a senior associate editor for the structural heart disease website SCAI.org.
