Dr. Prakash Balan possesses a diverse educational background and practices in the field of interventional cardiology. He completed his medical education at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio graduating with his MD in 2004. He went on to complete his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in cardiology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago in 2011. He then returned to Texas for his interventional cardiology fellowship at UTHealth from 2011-12. Since 2012, he has been faculty at the UTHealth McGovern Medical School and practices prmarily in the areas of coronary artery disease and valvular/structural heart disease. In particular, his clinical focus is complex high-risk percutaneous coronary interventions, acute myocardial infarction care, and catherer-based therapies for valvular heart disease including transcathereter valve replacement as well as all forms of hemodynamic support. His research interests include outcomes in transcatheter aortic valve replacement as well as acute myocardial infarction and cardiac arrest systems of care. He also takes an active interest in clinical education and serves as the co-director of CCU.
Dr. Balan is board certified in cardiovascular medicine and iterventional cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is also board certified in adult comprehensive echocardiography by the National Board of Echocardiography. Furthermore, he is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the Alpha-Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
