LLC resonant converter is one of the most preferred topologies for Electric Vehicle (EV) battery charging. However, the wide voltage range of batteries requires a wide frequency excursion of LLC resonant converters which is undesirable. This paper studies the operation of a capacitor clamped LLC resonant converter in the ZCS region. It is found this converter can achieve constant power with fixed frequency, ZVS in the ZCS region and low circulating current. These new features enable simultaneous high efficiency, power density and low cost for EV charging applications. Both simulations and experiments have been conducted to verify these features.
