Multilevel inverters are widely used in medium power PV systems. However, conventional multilevel inverters typically utilize high component count and cannot step up the voltage. In this digest, an improved multilevel boost inverter is presented for this application. The proposed inverter is able to generate a seven-level ac output voltage, while only eight switches and three capacitors are employed. The circuit operation is based on charge pump principle, which boosts the output voltage. A level-shift pulse-width-modulation (LS-PWM) mechanism is introduced to generate the driving signals. The principle of operation and modulation strategy are presented in details. The system is simulated under MATLAB/Simulink and real-time simulator DSPACE DS1202. Obtained results agree well with the theoretical analysis. Moreover, a low total-harmonic-distortion is achieved with low filter requirement and the capacitor voltages are well balanced.
