Traditional current-source inverter (CSI) using silicon-based reverse-voltage-blocking (RB) switches typically has high conduction loss, low switching frequency and bulky size. This paper proposes a new modulation scheme for an emerging three-phase CSI topology (H7-CSI) to make it compatible with wide bandgap (WBG) bidirectional (BD) switches to achieve higher efficiency as compared to the traditional CSI topology. The modulation together with the new topology also achieve noticeably reduced conducted common-mode (CM) EMI. Analysis, simulation and experimental results confirm the advantages of the proposed WBG BD switch-enabled H7-CSI over existing CSIs.
