In order to enable flexible electric grid topologies, concepts associated with the design, operation, and control of microgrids become important. Bi-directional power flow, seamless operational transitions in the midst of disturbances and the integration of new technologies are all relevant in modern power systems. To enable such important functionality, we explore new additions to the rectifier and inverter controllers in an AC-AC converter with a topology containing few switches. A self-synchronization technique is used to allow for more simple synchronization implementation while exhibiting stabilizing behavior. Also, additions will be made to the controller to control the DC voltage and ripple, important issues in any AC-AC converter.
