This study presents a smooth transition algorithm to prevent the over currents in the phase windings of a switched reluctance machine (SRM) during transitions between motoring and generating modes. The proposed algorithm modifies the excitation angles of the SRM control during transitions by predicting the peak current of the phases for any operating conditions. Being applicable for a wide range of speed, the algorithm is discussed more for high speed operations due to the electromagnetic and mechanical dynamics of the SRMs. A Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of an 18/12 type SRM is utilized to develop its electromagnetic, circuit and mechanical models for the dynamic simulations. The performance of the proposed control algorithm is verified for various scenarios through the dynamic simulations.
