Core Losses, DC bias, AC flux ripple, nanocrystalline, Steinmetz
Numerous power electronics topologies rely on magnetic components operating with DC bias flux. To develop a new nanocrystalline-based high frequency transformer, the authors have thoroughly characterized the core losses under DC flux bias conditions for several flux density ripples and have measured an unprecedented 4.3x increase under unsaturated-core conditions and typical flux density ripple (< 30%), when compared to no DC bias conditions. These results have been carefully analyzed and confirmed through several direct and indirect measurements and will be presented in this paper.
