This paper proposes a novel multifunctional active grounding method for distribution networks based on a three-phase four-leg converter installed on the busbar side of the distribution network. The four-leg converter can compensate for the reactive load current and suppress the single-phase-to-ground fault arc simultaneously. In this paper, the operation principal and controller design of the multifunctional active grounding method have been discussed. A 10 kV MATLAB/SIMULINK simulation model and a four-leg converter prototype have been built to verify the correctness of the proposed method.
