In this paper, a novel generalized bidirectional multilevel DC-DC converter is introduced. The proposed converter is capable of high power conversion connecting low voltage (LV) and medium voltage (MV) by using uniform low-voltage half bridge IGBT module. Single source is applied at low voltage side and both single and multiple sources can be applied at high voltage side. The operating rules are introduced and switching states and sequences are compared and selected. With the proposed control strategy, the converter can achieve bidirectional power flow, high voltage transfer ratio, reduced sizes of passive components and soft switching. Simulation and initial experimental results of the 4-level converter under boost mode are presented. The small signal model and control block diagram are derived to realize the close-loop control.
