Gate resistors in PFC boost converters are dimensioned as such that the PFC MOSFET's safe operating area is never exceeded. This considers the full load range, EMI requirements, and often results in non-optimal values for the gate resistance, generating higher switching losses during normal operation. This paper describes a novel, but simple, gate drive circuit which allows to change the gate resistance during operation and to overcome these dimensioning limitations. It explains the application background and analyses the switching behavior of power MOSFETs. Afterwards, the new concept is described and verified in a 2.5 kW demonstrator. Initial measurements prove the concept and more measurements are presented in the final paper.
