Gumbo Applications 10W LED to KW Converter

This paper presents the design and implementation of a multi-MHz multi-kV power amplifier for compact particle accelerators. The power amplifier achieves large voltage gains at high frequencies with relatively low losses by utilizing high-quality-factor inductors and ensuring soft switching of inverter transistors. The reliability of the system is enhanced by utilizing the parasitic capacitances of the accelerator structure to realize the capacitor of the power amplifier. Two prototype power amplifiers, designed using the proposed approach, are built and tested. These prototypes generate up to 10 kV output voltage at 13.56 MHz, and up to 8.3 kV output voltage at 27.12 MHz.
