Compared with the traditional centralized control strategies, the distributed control strategies improve the flexibility and expandability of an MMC system. This paper aims to address the stability issue introduced by the distributed capacitor voltage controls, by analyzing the potential instability risk and the capacitor voltage balancing capability of the voltage controls in the MMC distributed control system. Based on the analysis, a design principle is derived for capacitor voltage control loops, in order to guarantee the stable operation of the MMC. The rationality of the theoretical analysis and the correctness of the control parameter design principle are experimentally verified.
