Topologies for Utility Interface Converters
Active Filters, Geomagnetically Induced Currents, Harmonics, Voltage Regulation
In this paper, the mitigation of Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GICs) is proposed for utility transformers through a series active filter. The filter serves multiple purposes that include voltage regulation, harmonic elimination and automatic removal of GICs whenever a Geomagnetic Disturbance (GMD) affects that transformer. The proposed filter doesn't utilize a coupling transformer and is, therefore, inexpensive and serves the purpose as verified by the simulation results on a hardware in the loop platform.
