In order to meet power demand of processors and improve the whole system efficiency in smartphones, three-dimensional integrated voltage regulator operating at very high frequency becomes a promising solution. It requires ultra-low profile magnetic design with small footprint and loss, which is very challenging. In this paper, several novel, two phase negative coupled inductor structures are proposed. The design process and optimization is illustrated with the help of FEA tool. The result shows the new structure has large steady state inductance, low loss and small footprint at switching frequency of 20MHz. Three different inductor samples are fabricated and measurement results can match very well with simulation, which verifies the design.
