Power Hour: Pain Management for the Equine Patient - Traditional & Non-traditional Techniques
Case-based discussion of pain management in horses. Every horse responds differently to medications due to age, pain source and duration, genetics and personality differences. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are the basis for pain management but sensitivity to these drugs or long-term administration can limit safety and use. Opioids, local anesthetics, phenothiazines and anti-epileptic medications all have appropriate uses depending on the type and intensity of pain but can prove to be insufficient. Combining non-tradition techniques like acupuncture, massage, chiropractic, laser therapy and homeopathic medications can provide the balance to maintain comfort and minimize side-effects associated with medication administration.
