Equine / Donkey Castrations: A Guide to Successful Outcomes

Castration is worldwide one of the most frequent surgeries performed these days in the horse or donkey. Castrations are performed for multiple reasons. The most common one being eliminate stallion like behavior and prevention of reproduction of the stallion. Even if this procedure is seen as a routine surgical procedure in equine practice, we still have to consider this surgery as a major surgery for the horse. This procedure can present with life-threating complications and should therefore not be taken lightly. In this talk we will discuss pre- and post-operative considerations as well as several surgical techniques applicable in equine ambulatory practice with as goal to minimize complications.
