The Q&A session for this topic is Q&A 2: Emerging Contaminants and Radionuclide Occurrence, Treatment, and Media Disposal.
This session presents and overview of the types of naturally occurring radioactivity, their form(s) when present in drinking water, the various media used to remove them, and the checkerboard of regulations governing how they can be disposed of. Spent media that collects radioactive contaminants eventually becomes exhausted and must be disposed of. Unfortunately, existing laws governing the disposal of radioactive residuals were written primarily for man made radioactive contaminants and do not clearly describe how to safely and legally dispose of naturally occurring radioactive contaminants. The various regulations are presented in outline form along with general advice as to how to go about disposing of spent media that has been used to remove naturally occurring radioactive contaminants.
