Francis Rumsey and Alberto Pinto play short organ recitals, in place of the in-person recital they would have given together at a church in Vienna.
Francis Rumsey’s recital is from a church near Oxford in the UK, equipped with an entirely digital organ installation. The system is based on physical modelling synthesis of organ pipes (rather than sampled sound), which will be of particular interest to audio engineers. Francis was involved with this project about 5 years ago, and it involved rebuilding the entire console and reproduction system with the latest digital organ technology, adding a third manual and more stops. The system consists of 12 main audio channels split over two physical locations (nave and choir), as well as two sub-bass towers. The recital demonstrates some of the tone colors available from this remarkable instrument.

Alberto Pinto’s recital is from a church in Milan, Italy, equipped with a small mechanical organ of 19 stops spread over 2 manuals of 58 notes and a pedalboard of 30 notes. The organ was built in 1977 by the Italian company “Vincenzo Mascioni” from Azzio, a small town near Milan, in the Neo-Baroque style, typical of that period: narrow pipe diameters, stressed attack transients and a tonal balance a bit skewed towards high frequencies. The program, entirely dedicated to Johann Sebastian Bach, allows to listen to the different and characterised timbres of this very fine instrument, from the ethereal flutes up to the full organ. The audio recording was done from an auditory perspective by a MS Blumlein microphone setup.
