In the days of the dynamic development of the new media in the area of extended realities there is an increasing need for production processes for these media to also take place within these environments. This gives completely new possibilities of visualization and interaction with sound. In the „flat” environments as 2D screens those interfaces are merely a resamblence of physical equivalents, such as knobs, button and faders. In the 3D space of virtual reality these interfaces can have any form and shape. They can be scaled to any size, and they can fill up the space around the „virtual” studio without taking up the space of the actual room. The interactions with these tools can resamble more conducting an orchestra rather than using a control desk. This change can shift the way we produce sounds and thus bring new qualities in our work. Popular tools such as game engines can be used to develop such interfaces. With an interdisciplinary team I have created an interface for spatial audio performance called „Connexion”. The interface is used to control the granular synthesis and spatial positioning of sounds. The visual representation gives the performer clues about the characteristics of sound, and is also an indicator of the spatial propagation of sounds. This gives the performer actual feeling of performing with his gestures and movements as one has with the physical instruments. The form of the interface itself is digital art work and is used as a projection on the screen.
