Intelligent Mixing Systems (IMS) are being integrated into mixing workflows; but so far, there is little discussion around how these technologies are impacting mixing practices. This study explores the possibilities and pitfalls, in part, by comparing IMS to the use of Computer Assisted design (CAD) tools in the wider design context. A goal of this paper is to learn from CAD about the potential benefits and known issues of computer-assistance in creative work, thereby allowing audio engineers to take more informed decisions regarding the use of IMS within their workflows.
