Game Audio/AVAR/Spatial Audio
With Bose there is a new approach in AR audio applications which attracts a lot of people. But in my opinion all these apps that are out there do not even closely exploit the potential.
My workshop shall give people a hands-on approach on how to create immersive, believable 3D audio landscapes for AR audio (only) applications. Furthermore I will talk about the technical possibilities that are out there to create AR audio stories - like Unity, Wwise, binaural decoders, spatializers...
With SONIC TRACES (released 03/03/20) we created a location based AR audio application where people can be transported into the years 1848 (European revolution) and 2084 (dystopian version of our world). I will talk about the technical difficulties as there is no 'one-fits-it-all' software solution, but I will also point out the advantages of the different software solutions and the mixture of many.
But I will not limit my workshop to technical stuff. Storytelling in location based AR audio applications is a very new approach in storytelling itself. How do you guide your audience? What key sound sources makes for a believable acoustic environment? You always have to deal with all kinds of user interaction as there is no 'path', only a free to explore mode - very similar to game audio. But, different to game audio, you deal with a very unexperienced audience. We will explore the methods to guide people within a new audible world, and how far you can get surrealistic for people still to be immersed in this world.
After the workshop audio professionals shall be able to evaluate AR audio apps and furthermore be aware of the necessities of good immersive audio storytelling.
