Institute of Technical Acoustics, RWTH Aachen University
Gottfried Behler studied electrical engineering at RWTH Aachen University. He graduated from the faculty of Electronics and Communications Engineering at RWTH Aachen University, Aachen, Germany in 1983 and obtained his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from RWTH Aachen University in 1988.
After leaving RWTH Aachen University in 1989, G. Behler joined the German studio monitoring loudspeaker manufacturer Klein + Hummel as a design engineer for electro-acoustical devices and loudspeaker systems. During his time at K + H he became the leader of the research and development department. After three years with K+H he returned to RWTH Aachen University to join the Institute off Technical Acoustics (ITA) as a senior researcher. Today G. Behler is the managing director of the institute and head of the department for electro acoustics and measurement technologies. He received a university teaching position in electro acoustics from the faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at RWTH Aachen University in 2007 and another university teaching position in sound system design and loudspeaker technology in 2009 from the ‘Erich Tienhaus Institute’ of the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold. Since 6 years he is giving courses on electro acoustics in Penang (Malaysia) and Singapore.
The research work lead to the development of the simulation software BASSYST used for passive loudspeaker cabinet and crossover design. Under his leadership ITA started in 1992 the developement of a stereo 4-channel digital loudspeaker controller based on FIR filter design that was presented in 1994 at the annual music fair in Frankfurt.
G. Behler is member of the German acoustical society (DEGA) and was leader of the Technical Committee on electro acoustics of the DEGA from 2006 to 2013. He is an associate member of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) and the Audio Engineering Society (vice chair of Central German AES).
