Antibiotic Stewardship for Common Pediatric Infections

Antibiotic stewardship is a significant focus of all providers working in an adult or pediatric urgent care. While the focus is often on not prescribing unnecessary antibiotics, it should also be on using appropriate dosages and lengths of treatment for conditions requiring antibiotic treatment. This presentation will focus on a large pediatric urgent care program at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City who addressed this challenge by convening an expert panel of pediatric infectious disease specialists, pharmacists and pediatric urgent care physicians. They examined the literature and created an Outpatient Antibiotic Handbook. The handbook and information covers the latest evidence based recommendations for treating such common infections as acute otitis media, strep pharyngitis, community acquired pneumonia, acute bacterial rhinosinusitis, skin and soft tissue infections, urinary tract infections and pyelonephritis along with animal and human bites, dental abscesses and acute lymphadenitis.
