Previously in our organization, labs were performed at each center during clinical hours which led to provider distraction, interpretation errors, non-standardized management, and low patient, provider and associate satisfaction. We developed an off-site Lab Management Team, staffed by experienced mid-level practitioners with ED experience, which now manages approximately 54,000 labs per year for our organization. This team created and maintains a standardized lab management process across all clinic sites and improved the patient experience and provider and associate satisfaction. The Team identified and implemented evidence-based practices for the management of results, decreased the workload for medical assistants, decreased the number of incoming and outgoing calls at our centers, and decreased risk of errors by confirming completion of all labs by providers and of tasks assigned to medical assistants.
