How Dare You Improve my Field Entrance! And Other Challenges with Siting in Agricultural Communities
Presentation Description: Rural areas in the Great Plains offer optimal conditions for developing wind energy facilities and needed benefits to rural communities. However, developing in agricultural areas can pose its own unique challenges. Objectors often raise concerns about compatibility with current land use, impacts to crop production from altered drainage, access to their land, and impacts to aging septic fields or public water supply wells. Drawing from our experience in Illinois, we will discuss these key challenges as well as best strategies for reducing risk and streamlining projects in agricultural communities.
