The CELL HANDLER enables automated selection of single cells or multicellular 3D spheroids and transfers them to a microplate (e.g. 384-well), while simultaneously capturing images before picking and after transfer. The CELL HANDLER uses a unique disposable tip and cell chamber developed to gently handle even small or fragile cells and the tip enables to pick organoids cultured in gel directly. Imaging before and after cell placement enables and confirms that the correct size, shape, and number of spheroids have been transferred while also providing a critical quality control record.
Conventional manual methods have been hampered by low throughput and suboptimal accuracy. Currently, sensitivity and biomarker experiments used to evaluate various anti-cancer agents against cancer spheroids/organoids require significant time, cost and labor. It is difficult and time consuming to manually select and pick appropriate target spheroids/organoids from floating culture or in-gel culture. It’s also time consuming and labor intensive to manually select and pick single cell clones that have been genetically modified (e.g. antibody-producing cells).
The CELL HANDLER is a high-speed, high-precision pick and place system coupled with image capture and analysis capability that greatly increases the throughput and reliability of spheroid/organoid and single cell assays for drug screening and research. Yamaha Motor Company is filling the gap for scale up in the expanding market for isolating and utilizing single cells or 3D multicellular spheroids, including iPS cells, organoids and ex vivo culture.
