Automating Chemistry in the age of AI
Today, drug discovery remains a game of big numbers and many organizations routinely investigate small molecules collection in the 200,000 to 2 million compound range. Automation of chemical synthesis has gained a renewed interest to produce novel compounds and to facilitate the challenging multidimensional problem of compound optimization. This presentation will describe the strategy and obstacles to implement a technology platform for the production of 90,000 compounds per year in 13 mg quantity and >90% purity. Custom designed robotic instruments, specialized laboratory infrastructure, workflows, logistics and data management to enable high throughput synthesis and purification will be discussed. The implementation of core supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) technologies provided a unique opportunity to increase the productivity and significantly reduce the operational costs. The presentation will conclude with an overview of integration of chemistry automation with advanced compounds management systems.
