Dr. Soulen received his BS from Yale University and MD from the University of Pennsylvania. He was then Resident and Chief Resident at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, followed by clinical and research Fellowships at Thomas Jefferson University. He joined the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania in 1991, where he is now Professor of Radiology & Surgery and Director of Interventional Oncology at the Abramson Cancer Center. His clinical practice focuses on image-guided therapies for hepatic malignancies, particularly metastatic neuroendocrine tumors. More than 200 publications reflect the evolution from pre-clinical research to his current focus on clinical trials. He is the principal investigator for the RETNET trial, the first randomized trial of standard embolization techniques for liver metastases.
Dr. Soulen served on the board of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) for 10 years and as Director for Research Education of the SIR Foundation for four years. He chaired the SIR Annual Scientific Meeting, as well as numerous other research and CME courses. He is on the Board of the Society of Interventional Oncology, where he served as annual meeting chair and board chair. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the North American Neuroendocrine Tumor Society, and is the Clinical Chair of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Clinical Trials Methodology Workshop. He has served on the editorial boards of the major journals in the field, on NIH study sections for image-guided therapy, and reviews grants for multiple research foundations including RSNA, SIR, and SIO.
