Dr. Venkatesh L. Murthy is a leader in the non-invasive assessment of cardiometabolic risk using metabolomics and advanced imaging techniques. After completing his B.S. and M.S. degrees at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and he earned M.D. and Ph.D. (Biophysics) degrees at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He completed internal medicine residency at Johns Hopkins followed by fellowships in cardiovascular medicine and multi-modality cardiovascular imaging at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital. He is quadruple board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular medicine, nuclear cardiology and echocardiography. He is currently an Associate Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Radiology and the Melvyn Rubenfire Professor of Preventive Cardiology at the University of Michigan and Director of Cardiac PET Research.
Dr. Murthy’s research work is funded by multiple grants from the National Institutes of Health as well as industry and foundations. He has published numerous papers related to the role of visceral adiposity and obesity in the development of cardiometabolic diseases such as atherosclerosis, heart failure, hypertension and diabetes. He is also a leader in the development of quantitative methods for cardiac imaging with a particular focus in cardiac PET imaging. He has authored more than 130 scientific publications, book chapters and review articles. He serves is Associate Editor and Digital Strategies Editor for Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging and editorial board member for the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology, Cardiovascular Diabetology, and Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases. He has received numerous awards including first place in the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) Cardiovascular Council Young Investigator competition, the SNMMI Young Professionals Prize, 3rd place in the SNMMI Center for Molecular Imaging and Translation Young Investigator competition and 1st place in the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC) Young Investigator competition.
Dr. Murthy is currently President of the SNMMI Cardiovascular Council and was previously a member of the Board of Directors. He is also a member of the Quality and Safety Committee of ASNC and participated in numerous documents developed by SNMMI and ASNC.
