8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Location: Chatfield State Park
Denver’s beautiful Chatfield State Park is the site of SAEM20 MedWAR (Medical Wilderness Adventure Race), a unique event that combines wilderness medical challenges with adventure racing. The race is a tool for teaching and testing the knowledge, skills, and techniques of wilderness medicine, and for promoting teamwork and collegiality among competitors. Here’s how it works: Teams of three use map-and-compass orienteering navigation to arrive a series of checkpoints in the wilderness. At checkpoints, participants will complete either a multiple-choice question (minor checkpoints) or a simulated wilderness medicine scenario (major checkpoints). Competitors will also encounter physical challenges (e.g. canoeing, orienteering, and trail running). Participants will be graded on completion of several critical actions in order to pass the scenario and move forward in the race or will remediate skills in a teaching environment. To win, participants must complete all major checkpoints and as many minor checkpoints as possible in the time allotted and finish the adventure race prior to other competing teams.
