Dr. Baren is Immediate Past Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and Professor of Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics, and Medical Ethics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. After completing the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program in 2010, she was named Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and served as the first woman Chair. Dr. Baren is residency trained and board certified in Emergency Medicine with subspecialty fellowship training and board certification in Pediatric Emergency Medicine. She maintains a clinical practice in both specialties as an attending physician at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Within the Penn Medicine, Dr. Baren has served in many leadership roles: Department Chair of Emergency Medicine, Chief of Emergency Services, Interim Chair of Emergency Medicine at Pennsylvania Hospital, President-Elect of the Medical Faculty Senate, Chair of Human Research Review Committee and Chair of the Human Research Advisory Committee in the Office of the Vice-Provost for Research. She has been a member of the Medical Board of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, the Faculty Advisory Committee on Clinical Research, the Simulation Center Steering Committee and the Board of Directors for the Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania, and multiple other committees, task forces and special initiatives at the Perelman School of Medicine, the University of Pennsylvania Health System and the University of Pennsylvania. As the first ever nominee through the Office of the President at Penn, Dr. Baren was recently selected to participate in the 2018-19 American Council on Education Fellows Program for aspiring future leaders in higher education.
Nationally Dr. Baren has held leadership positions in multiple emergency medicine organizations. She served on the Board of Directors, Chair of the Foundation Board of Trustees, and as President of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, Chair of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Sub-board at the American Board of Pediatrics, and Chair of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Committee of the American College of Emergency Physicians. She is currently serving a four-year term as an Officer and Executive Committee Member and is currently President-Elect of the American Board of Emergency Medicine. She was the 2017 recipient of the John A. Marx Leadership Award from the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine in honor of her exceptional contributions to the specialty.
Dr. Baren has lectured nationally and internationally and has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles, editorials and book chapters. She co-edited “Emergency Medicine Pearls,” was the Senior Editor of the textbook, “Pediatric Emergency Medicine” and is an Associate Editor of Rosen’s Emergency Medicine Textbook, 9th Edition. She is a reviewer for multiple scientific journals. Dr. Baren’s research focuses on informed consent within clinical trials of acute neurological emergencies. Her work has been funded by The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the American Lung Association and the Emergency Medicine Foundation.
