Learn the fundamentals of sashiko stitching from a sashiko artisan born in a sashiko family. In sashiko stitching, we use unique tools such as long, small-eye needles, a round thimble, and specific thread. Participants will learn how to use those tools with appropriate postures step by step and aim to feel the “rhythm” after the intensive stitching in the workshop. Sashiko is not about making one perfect stitch. It is about appreciating the fabric with moving the needles in a judgement-free mindset. Once we learn how to move the needle, we can enjoy the beautiful results. This is a learning opportunity rather than “let’s do sashiko together” workshop. Anyone who is interested in sashiko is welcome. We will learn how to move the needle (運針 - Unshin), and make beautiful sashiko stitches as the results of the needle movement — while enjoying the process.
