This quilt uses a traditional motif called "step and shoulder" (or "darj wa ketef" in Arabic) found primarily in mosaics and carvings across modern day Morocco and Spain. I decided to focus on the continuous lines that weave over and under each other, which provided an opportunity to play with subtle color changes and gradients. The shapes were all hand appliquéd and the background was filled with with matchstick machine quilting.
