The inspiration for this quilt was the traditional log cabin block, reinterpreted as a Compass Rose--used in cartography to denote the different compass points--and also worn by sailors as a tattoo symbolizing their wish to return safely home again. The quilt was machine pieced and machine quilted--with added areas of Sashiko hand stitching--on fabrics that include hand painted and indigo dyed cottons and a few touches of silk.
