Track 1: Building and Sustaining Resilient Communities
Since September of 2018, there have been over 1,000 confirmed measles cases in New York State, predominantly in observant Jewish communities in New York City and Rockland County. Convincing these populations to accept that vaccines are safe challenges beliefs held by many in the community, and is a daunting task. Despite these challenges, NYSDOH and its partners engaged in a multi-pronged outreach campaign to raise vaccination rates, and help to minimize a disease outbreak that could have been massive in scope. This presentation will showcase the wide array of posters, ads, mall banners, door hangers, and other materials that proved to be effective, as well as focus on the techniques used to engage community leaders to assist in efforts to convince their communities to vaccinate.
