Track 4: Enhancing Public Health, Healthcare, and Emergency Management Systems
In summer 2019, public health officials in multiple states identified an uptick in severe pulmonary syndromes in individuals reporting a history of e-cigarette product use (e.g., devices, liquids, refill pods, and cartridges) or vaping. In August, the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) activated its Incident Command System (ICS) to support state and local epidemiologists responding to the multi-state outbreak. Working with CDC, CSTE coordinated an epidemiologic task force comprising state and local epidemiologists to develop an interim outbreak case definition for public health surveillance. During this session, the role of public health nonprofits in preparedness and response will be highlighted with lessons learned from this coordinated outbreak response effort, along with recommendations for future non-infectious disease outbreak responses.
