John Yates is a first generation Cuban-American born and raised in Harlem, NY. With substantial non-profit and community organizing experience, John is passionate about dismantling structural racism and developing anti-racist policies.
Early in his career, John leveraged is Bachelor in Sociology to support community based organizations in addressing the intersectional barriers of race, class, and gender in NYC’s Queer and Trans youth. Upon completion of his Masters in Business in Administration, John began serving in the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene as an Operations Manager supporting in the fight against the opioid crisis through prevention and harm reduction strategies.
John is currently a J.D. candidate at the CUNY School of Law and is serving as the Director of Racial Equity and Social Justice in the Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response. In his current role, John is providing subject matter expertise and emergency response technical assistance to Emergency Response Groups across the Incident Command Structure in order to address racial health disparities within the COVID-19 response and apply an anti-racist framework to the field of Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response.
