Westford (MA) MRC
I wrote the grant on behalf of our MRC unit, which received a Challenge Award -- "Regional Readiness: Teaming Youth with MRCs for Multi-Generational Preparedness." My roles on this project included collaboration with our neighboring MRC for shared grant activities, meeting with multiple response partners and team members for project planning, ordering supplies and overseeing volunteers to prepare emergency kits, working with the person who was authorized to make home visits, and sharing information gained from research on Emergency Preparedness outreach for vulnerable populations. It helped that I've had training and experience in medical specialty care sheltering, as well as an understanding of disaster issues related to the elderly and those with functional needs. Certification and field experience as an Emergency Medical Technician since 1979 also proved to be an asset, in anticipating the concerns of local residents who may require additional assistance -- in case of the need to either evacuate their homes or shelter in place.
Experience as our unit's MRC Coordinator since 2004 gave me additional perspective on the potential role of volunteers in providing this type of community service, as well as protecting sensitive information and deferring to our Public Health host agent to adjust the roles of participants.
