Joanne Sobeck, Ph.D., is an Associate Dean for Research and Director of the Center for Social Work Research in the School of Social Work at Wayne State University. In this capacity, she directs strategies related to building infrastructure to support faculty research and engaging community partnerships to develop and evaluate best practices and community interventions. She has served as a Co-I or Co-PI on interdiscplinary research teams which examined the Flint Water Crisis and the outbreak of Legionnaires Disease; Citizenship for Health Program, a pilot study to test the implementation of deliberative democratic practices among residents to solve community health issues; and barriers and facilitators to appropriate consumer use of antibiotics among clinic and community populations. Her current research involves a mulitdisplinary team of researchers working to understand the relationship between public health and water systems, and how the two can interact to enhance resilience and sustainability. Her combined experiences and publications in community-based research and capacity building also provide a strong basis for her teaching, mentoring, and commitment to social and environmental justice.
