In recent years there has been an increased shift towards the production of carrier-free/composite particles for dry powder inhalers (DPI) delivery using the Spray drying technology. In a single step, formulation and particle engineering are combined providing a universal platform that stabilizes small molecule APIs/biopharmaceuticals, enables a fine control over the powder properties and a consistent, improved and tailor-made aerodynamic performance for low dosage DPIs.
The use of the continuous, spray drying technology also allows a fine control over the atomization and drying kinetics which is specifically important for the manufacturing of shear/thermo-sensitive biopharmaceuticals. An integrated overview of the platform capabilities from lab to commercial in terms of formulation, particle engineering, capsule filling and devices point of view is presented. The specific analytical package for the development of biopharmaceuticals is also addressed. The end-to-end challenges and opportunities of this Platform will be highlighted.
