If you ask STEM managers what they think about giving feedback, you would not be surprised to hear that this is not something they look forward to. Why? Most say they don't like giving bad news. Some STEM managers are put off by the potential emotionality from the receiver. Other STEM managers don't see giving feedback as part of their job as manager. The belief is if you still have a job you're doing OK. One reason why STEM managers are uncomfortable with giving feedback is that they have never been taught how to do it and how to do it well. This workshop reviews a four-step model of giving actionable feedback and goes beyond the STEM manager saying "great job". The SBI+ model organizes the feedback process so that the feedback is specific, measurable and timely. STEM managers and employees together focus on one current situation, identify the desired behavior, and how this behavior positively or negatively impacts on the STEM manager. The final step is for the STEM manager to check in with the employee to ensure that the desired behavior continues. By the end of the webinar, participants see how the value of a logical sequence of offering input will generate a rational and productive conversation.
