Matt Croughan, Ph.D., Biotechnology Industry Consultant. For over 20 years, Matt has worked as an independent consultant providing expert guidance on biopharmaceutical, cell therapy, and biofuels process development and manufacturing to more than 85 firms. He works not only on breakthrough technologies for large firms like Pfizer and J&J, but also oversees all development issues for many smaller firms bringing new therapies from research to market. From 2013 to 2014, he was Chief Technology Officer at Sapphire Energy, Inc., where he led the development of methods to economically produce renewable crude oil from algae. From 2006 to 2013, Matt served as the George B. and Joy Rathmann Professor and Director of the Amgen Bioprocessing Center at Keck Graduate Institute (KGI) in Claremont, CA, with over 108 Masters and Doctoral graduates in bioprocessing. From 1988 to 1998, Matt worked at Genentech, where he developed the first licensed, high density, fed batch animal cell culture process. Variants of this process have been used to manufacture most monoclonal antibody therapeutics. Matt has two chemical engineering degrees, a Ph.D. from MIT (1988) and BS from UC Berkeley (1983).
