Gallagher Benefit Services Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States
We say "PT first" but how do we get the message to the masses? Why do so few American's with back pain seek out the guidance of a physical therapist? I believe it is our fault. As physical therapists we have not done a great job tooting our own horn. We have not provided a sold value proposition for our clients and potential clients. Ask around, most people do not understand what a physical therapist does or how they can help prevent injuries. Physical therapists have been left out of the "prevention and wellness" game and we need to be primary. We need to be the FIRST healthcare provider. We need to bring physical therapists directly to the employer. Every company in the US with greater than 500 employees needs a physical therapist onsite 1 day a week. The ROI can be proven for the employee and the employer and the physical therapist will finally be at the center and beginning of the healthcare continuum. Why not us physical therapists? One of the highest costs for employers is WC Insurance and WC claim dollars for the self insured, benefits, employee retention, and the cost of having unhealthy employees. Onsite physical therapy can and does solve most of the costs previously listed. Lets discuss the benefits of providing onsite services to the healthcare system as a whole as well as for our profession. We will also discuss where PT fits into the healthcare ecosystem of direct to employer programs.
